The Mysterious Sea Monster Attack

In 660, a Chinese fleet falls under attack by an enigmatic sea creature in the depths of the East China Sea. The onslaught leaves numerous vessels in ruins and the remaining ships severely crippled.

The Empress’s Decree

Empress Wu Zetian (Carina Lau) assigns Yuchi (Feng Shaofeng), a member of the Ministry of Justice, the task of delving into the sea monster assaults. She imposes a strict deadline of ten days, threatening execution should he fail. Meanwhile, the young Dee Renjie (Mark Chao) arrives in the Imperial Capital Luoyang, following a commendation to join the Court of Judicature and Revision (Da Li Si).

The Plot Unfolds

Dee inadvertently overhears a conspiracy to abduct Yin Ruiji (Angelababy), the woman designated as an offering to placate the sea monster. A skirmish ensues as Dee thwarts the kidnappers, ultimately rescuing Ruiji from a humanoid sea entity. Yuchi then apprehends Dee and places Ruiji under protection. However, Dee escapes confinement with the help of medical aide Shatuo (Lin Gengxin).

Ruiji recognizes the sea creature as her lost lover, Yuan Zhen, and endeavors to connect with him. Subsequently, they expose a traitor in the Da Li Si and thwart the rebel faction led by Huo Yi (Dong Hu).

Amidst their pursuit of the rebel leader, they confront the monstrous sea creature, a mutated manta ray engineered by the Dondo faction. Empress Wu detains Ruiji due to her origins from the Fuyu Kingdom, prompting Dee to strike a deal for her release upon capturing the rebel leader.

Following a series of events, the sea monster targets their fleet, culminating in a harrowing encounter where they deploy poisoned bait to vanquish the behemoth. Emerging triumphant, Dee earns accolades from the Emperor and ascends to lead the Da Li Si, steering Yuan and Ruiji away from imperial conflict.
