Eva Khatchadourian, who used to be a successful travel writer, now lives in a rundown house and works at a travel agency near a prison. She visits her son Kevin, who has been convicted of mass-murdering students at his high school. As she deals with the hostility of her neighbors, she reflects on her memories of raising him.

A Mother’s Struggle

Despite being hesitant about motherhood, Eva decides to have a family with Franklin and gives birth to Kevin. From a young age, Eva sees Kevin as detached and difficult. He seems to despise and purposely provoke Eva, making it hard for her to connect with him. As a baby, he cries only around her; as a child, he rejects Eva’s attempts at affection, showing no interest in anything. In contrast, he acts lovingly towards his father Franklin, who overlooks Eva’s concerns and defends Kevin’s actions. When Eva’s frustration reaches its peak, she throws Kevin against the wall, breaking his arm. Kevin manipulates the situation and gains sympathy from Franklin.

The Build-Up to Tragedy

When Kevin falls ill with a fever, he shows kindness towards Eva while she reads to him. However, once he recovers, his cruelty towards her returns. Franklin gifts Kevin a bow and arrow, teaching him archery skills. Eva later gives birth to their second child, Celia, whom Kevin disrespects from the start. Celia’s pet guinea pig goes missing, only to be found dead in the garbage disposal. Celia loses an eye due to exposure to drain cleaner while under Kevin’s care, sparking Eva’s suspicions of his intentions. Franklin defends Kevin, leading to strain in their marriage.

As Kevin’s 16th birthday approaches, he locks students in the school gymnasium and murders them with his bow and arrows. Eva witnesses his arrest and later discovers he has also killed Franklin and Celia at home.

The Aftermath and Closure

Two years after the tragedy, Eva visits Kevin in prison. His demeanor is now demure and fearful, awaiting transfer to an adult facility. When asked why he committed the murders, Kevin admits uncertainty. Eva, torn between love and devastation, embraces him before leaving.
