Charlie O’Brien, a circus owner, meets Jacob Jankowski, an elderly man who has been separated from his nursing home group. Jacob shares that he was once involved in the circus business and witnessed one of the most infamous circus disasters.
In 1931, Jacob, a 23-year-old veterinary medicine student, faces a tragic event when his parents die in a car accident. With the family home foreclosed and the Great Depression in full force, Jacob hops onto a passing circus train in search of a new beginning. He encounters Camel, an employee of Benzini Bros., who agrees to help him secure a job.
Jacob meets August, the ringmaster, who is intrigued by Jacob’s veterinary background and hires him to care for the animals. Jacob also meets Marlena Rosenbluth, August’s wife and a performer in the circus. When Jacob discovers that their star show horse has a debilitating condition, he takes it upon himself to euthanize the animal, much to August’s anger.
Observing August’s possessive behavior towards Marlena, Jacob begins to develop feelings for her. He gets the opportunity to train Rosie, an Asian elephant procured by August. Over time, Jacob and Marlena grow closer as they work together to heal Rosie’s wounds inflicted by August’s cruelty.
August’s abuse towards Marlena intensifies, and when Jacob learns of August’s plan to harm him, they decide to flee the circus together. They seek refuge in a hotel but are ambushed by August’s henchmen, resulting in Marlena’s capture and Jacob getting beaten up.
Despite the danger, Jacob returns to the circus train and discovers Marlena again. He nearly kills August while he sleeps but is informed by Marlena of the deaths of Camel and Walter, their friends from the circus. Together, they decide to release all the animals from their cages during a performance, leading to the downfall of the Benzini Bros. circus.
In the present, Jacob tells Charlie O’Brien that he and Marlena joined Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, where Jacob worked as a veterinarian and Marlena continued performing with Rosie. They built a life together, raising five children on a farm and keeping Rosie until her death.
After Marlena’s peaceful passing, Jacob seeks to avoid returning to the lonely nursing home and asks for a job as a ticket taker with the circus, a request that O’Brien grants.
