In the vibrant techno kingdom, the Techno Trolls, led by King Trollex, are enjoying a lively rave. However, their celebration is abruptly interrupted by the Hard Rock Trolls, commanded by Queen Barb, who arrives with weaponized guitars, determined to seize control. Barb demands that Trollex surrender and hand over his precious “string.”

The Invitation to Unite: A Call from Barb

Two years after achieving peace with the Bergens, Poppy, the newly crowned queen of the Pop Trolls, receives an unexpected letter from Barb. The message invites her to bring her “string” in hopes of uniting the trolls. Poppy’s father, King Peppy, explains the history of the six magical lyre strings, each representing a major music genre: Techno, Funk, Classical, Country, Hard Rock, and Pop. He reveals that the tribes once shared these strings but separated due to their differences.

Despite the skepticism of King Peppy, Branch, and their friends, Poppy decides to sneak out with the pop string to prove that Barb is just like any other troll. Accompanying her are Branch, who is struggling to confess his feelings, and Biggie, who has stowed away for the adventure. Meanwhile, Cooper discovers old illustrations of trolls resembling him and embarks on a quest to find them, eventually getting beamed up into a mysterious spaceship.

The Quest Begins: Facing Bounty Hunters

As Poppy and her friends set off, Barb sends bounty hunters from smaller music genres to track them down, promising to spare the tribe of whoever succeeds. The group soon arrives at the ruins of the Classical tribe’s town, Symphonyville, where they meet a sentient flute named Pennywhistle. Pennywhistle reveals Barb’s plan to forcefully unite all trolls under the banner of Rock.

Determined to warn the Country Trolls, led by Delta Dawn, Poppy and her friends head to Lonesome Flats. Poppy believes their music is too somber and decides to uplift their spirits first, despite Branch’s concerns. However, the Pop Trolls find themselves imprisoned, only to be rescued by a charming Country Troll named Hickory. After a thrilling chase, Hickory constructs a raft to take them to Vibe City, where they hope to warn the Funk Trolls.

Unexpected Allies: The Journey to Vibe City

Upon reaching Vibe City, they discover it is the very spaceship that abducted Cooper. The group reunites with Cooper, who reveals his royal lineage as the son of King Quincy and Queen Essence, and the twin brother of Prince D. Poppy seeks the royal family’s assistance against Barb, hoping to demonstrate that all trolls can coexist peacefully. However, the King and Queen explain that the initial division among the tribes stemmed from the Pop Trolls’ attempt to unify everyone under Pop music, highlighting that trolls cannot thrive in harmony by ignoring their differences.

As the Hard Rock Trolls launch an attack on the ship to capture the funk string, Poppy and her friends are ejected to safety using bubbles, inadvertently separating from Hickory. After a heated argument with Poppy, Branch walks away and is captured by Reggaeton and K-Pop trolls, who argue over him until he persuades them to unite against Barb.

Betrayal and Redemption: The Truth About Hickory

Meanwhile, Hickory is revealed to be a Yodeling troll who disguised himself as a Country Troll to steal Poppy’s string. He urges Poppy to flee just as Barb arrives and captures her, claiming the sixth string. Back in Pop Village, Biggie discovers the destruction left in Barb’s wake and realizes he should have stayed with Poppy. He rallies their friends to rescue her while disguising themselves as Hard Rock Trolls.

The Final Showdown: Music vs. Control

At Volcano Rock City, Barb forces her captives to attend a concert where she uses the six strings on her guitar to transform them into Rock Zombies, including Branch, who attempts to rescue Poppy alongside the Reggaeton and K-Pop trolls. Poppy appears to succumb to the transformation but reveals she has used gumdrops to block out the music. She confronts Barb, criticizing her for failing as a queen by not listening to her people.

In a moment of defiance, Poppy smashes Barb’s guitar, which restores the zombies to their original forms. However, the destruction of the strings results in the end of music, casting a gray pall over all trolls. Barb, feeling defeated, blames Poppy for the loss of music and the repetition of history.
