The Wind Rises Watch Free: A Journey of Dreams and Love

In 1918, a young man named Jiro Horikoshi dreams of soaring through the skies as a pilot. However, his nearsightedness stands in the way of his aspirations. Inspired by a magazine, Jiro begins to have recurring dreams of flying alongside his idol, the renowned Italian aircraft designer Giovanni Battista Caproni, aboard the Caproni Ca.60. In these dreams, Caproni reveals that he has never flown a plane himself, emphasizing that building aircraft is far more fulfilling than flying them.

Jiro’s Early Years and the Great Kantō Earthquake

Five years later, after the real Caproni Ca.60’s failure, Jiro is now an aeronautical engineering student at Tokyo Imperial University. During a trip home to visit family, he encounters a young girl named Nahoko Satomi, who is traveling with her maid, Kinu. Suddenly, the Great Kantō earthquake strikes, causing chaos and injury. Jiro steps in to help Nahoko carry Kinu, who has suffered a broken leg, to her family home. They part ways without exchanging names, but the encounter leaves a lasting impression on Jiro.

Graduation and the Struggles of the Aeronautics Industry

In 1925, Jiro graduates alongside his friend Kiro Honjo, and both secure positions at Mitsubishi, an aircraft manufacturer, during the challenging times of the Great Depression. They are tasked with perfecting a fighter plane, the Mitsubishi 1MF9, for the Imperial Army. Unfortunately, during a test flight, the aircraft disintegrates midair, leading to its rejection. In a bid to pivot their efforts, Mitsubishi sends Jiro and Honjo to the Weimar Republic in 1929 to acquire a production license for the Junkers G.38 aircraft, with the intention of developing a bomber.

Upon arrival, they are welcomed by Hugo Junkers, but their efforts are thwarted by the Sicherheitspolizei, who block their access to complete plans. Disheartened by the realization of Japan’s lagging aeronautics technology, Jiro returns home, while Honjo remains and eventually creates the Mitsubishi G4M.

Romance Blooms Amidst Turmoil

In early 1932, Jiro is promoted to chief designer for a fighter plane competition sponsored by the Imperial Navy. However, his design, the Mitsubishi 1MF10, fails testing in 1933 and is ultimately rejected. Disheartened, Jiro takes a vacation at a summer resort in Karuizawa, where he unexpectedly reunites with Nahoko, who has been searching for him since their first encounter. Their connection rekindles, and a romance blossoms, aided by a German tourist named Castorp.

Castorp, critical of Nazi Germany, warns Jiro about the dangers posed by Adolf Hitler, who has imprisoned Junkers for opposing the regime. He expresses concern that Germany may soon declare another world war, this time in alliance with Japan, before fleeing from the Special Higher Police.

Facing Challenges and Building a Future

As their love story unfolds, Nahoko is diagnosed with tuberculosis. Jiro, determined to marry her, seeks her father’s blessing, and they become engaged. However, Nahoko wishes to postpone the wedding until she recovers and returns to her family. With the authorities searching for him due to his connection with Castorp, Jiro hides at his supervisor Kurokawa’s home while working on a new fighter aircraft project for the Imperial Navy.

When Nahoko suffers a pulmonary hemorrhage, Jiro rushes to her side. Despite her condition, Nahoko decides to check into a mountain sanatorium for recovery but cannot bear to be apart from Jiro. She returns to him, and Kurokawa and his wife facilitate their marriage, allowing the couple to stay in their home with Nahoko’s father’s consent. Jiro’s sister, Kayo, a doctor, warns him that their marriage may end tragically due to Nahoko’s illness, but they cherish their time together despite the looming uncertainty.

The Test Flight and Heartbreaking Farewell

As Jiro prepares for the test flight of his new prototype aircraft, the Mitsubishi Ka-14, Nahoko, aware of her impending fate, writes farewell letters for Jiro, her family, and friends. In a desperate attempt to return to the sanatorium, she discreetly leaves their home. At the test site, Jiro’s success is overshadowed by a gust of wind, symbolizing Nahoko’s passing.
