Beth Boothby, a successful born-again evangelical pop singer from Texas, and her fiancé Steve Thompson, both members of the “Cowboys for Christ” group, travel to Glasgow to preach Christianity. However, they encounter a negative reception and are invited by Sir Lachlan Morrison to Tressock, a village in the Scottish Lowlands, where they are unknowingly meant for a central role in a May Day celebration.
The villagers of Tressock, suffering from infertility due to Sir Lachlan’s nuclear power plant, worship the Celtic goddess Sulis. Steve’s affair with a villager leads to tragic consequences during the May Day festival, as he is sacrificed in a ritual. Beth confronts Sir Lachlan and takes matters into her own hands by setting fire to the wicker tree, resulting in his death.
Beth’s attempted escape ends in her capture and demise, with her body displayed alongside previous May Queens. Lolly, carrying Steve’s child, brings hope for a new generation in Tressock. Delia’s prayer for more men to sire children signifies a cycle of life continuing in the village.
