In Japanese-occupied Korea in 1925, revered hunter Chun Man-duk lives with his teenage son, Seok, near Mount Jirisan. Following a tragic accident years ago, Chun Man-duk has retired his rifle and become a humble herb gatherer among his cherished mountains. The Japanese governor-general becomes obsessed with killing a massive, one-eyed male tiger known as the Mountain Lord.
Chun Man-duk’s former hunting partner, Gu-kyung, leads a group of hunters attempting to track and kill the Mountain Lord. It is revealed that Man-duk spared the one-eyed cub of the Mountain Lord’s mother, who he wounded. The cub grows up to become the giant male tiger.
Seok, Chun Man-duk’s son, joins a hunt to earn a bounty to marry his love. During the hunt, Seok is mortally wounded by the Mountain Lord. The tiger brings Seok’s body to Man-duk’s cabin after fighting off wolves.
As winter sets in, Japanese soldiers aim to find and kill the Mountain Lord. Man-duk resists attempts to enlist his help. Bereft of mates and offspring, both hunter and tiger head to the snow-covered mountain top with bounty hunters and the army in pursuit.
At the mountain top, Man-duk faces the Mountain Lord. After a tense moment, Man-duk and the tiger fall off the mountain together to their deaths. The governor-general decides to withdraw his army after hearing of the incident.
