In 1938 in Salzburg, at the end of the Federal State of Austria regime, Maria is a free-spirited young Austrian woman studying to become a nun at Nonnberg Abbey. She is sent to be the governess to Captain Georg von Trapp’s seven children. The Captain, following his wife’s death, has been raising his children with strict military discipline. Through kindness and patience, Maria wins the children’s trust.
Maria makes playclothes for the children and teaches them how to sing while exploring Salzburg. When the Captain returns with Baroness Elsa Schraeder, the children sing for them, leading to a change of heart in the Captain. Impressed by their singing, Max proposes they enter the children in the Salzburg Festival, but the Captain initially disapproves.
As Maria grows closer to the family, she realizes her feelings for the Captain and struggles with her emotions. The Baroness notices the Captain’s attraction to Maria and gracefully steps aside, encouraging the Captain to express his feelings. The couple eventually marries, but their happiness is short-lived as the rise of the Third Reich threatens their peaceful life.
With Austria annexed by the Nazis, the von Trapp family must flee the country. They attempt to escape to Switzerland during the Salzburg Festival, with the help of the Abbey’s nuns and a daring plan to outsmart the pursuing Brownshirts. Ultimately, the family reaches safety in Switzerland, securing their freedom.
