The film begins with the execution of Congolese Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba and the eruption of civil war. Amidst this turmoil, the mineral-rich State of Katanga secedes under the leadership of Moise Tshombe. United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld tasks Conor Cruise O’Brien with leading a UN peacekeeping mission. Privately, Hammarskjöld warns O’Brien of the potential for the Katanga crisis to ignite World War III, urging offensive action.
Irish Army Commandant Pat Quinlan oversees an infantry company of Irish peacekeepers who arrive at the vulnerable UN compound near Jadotville. Recognizing the exposed nature of the compound, Quinlan orders his men to fortify defenses by digging trenches and defensive positions. As Quinlan navigates the precarious situation, he encounters French mercenary Rene Faulques, hired by mining companies allied with Tshombe’s regime.
Meanwhile, O’Brien orchestrates a UN attack on Government buildings in Elizabethville held by Katangese forces. Amidst the chaos, unarmed Katangese radio operators are fatally gunned down. In retaliation, Faulques initiates a siege on Jadotville, leading Katangese and mercenary forces in repeated attacks. Despite valiant efforts, Quinlan’s company eventually surrenders to Faulques’s troops after depleting their resources. The Irish soldiers endure captivity before being part of a prisoner exchange and returning home.
Upon returning, Quinlan faces censure for the surrender of “A” Company, as political motivations drive a cover-up of the truth behind the siege. Decades later, a comprehensive review vindicates the bravery and resilience of the Irish soldiers, restoring their honor.
