The Sheltering Sky – A Journey in the Sahara Desert

Three Americans from New York embark on an adventure to Oran, French Algeria in 1947. Port Moresby, Kit, and their friend George Tunner set out on a trip that will lead them into the depths of the Sahara Desert. Tunner remarks, “We’re probably the first tourists they’ve had since the war,” to which Kit responds, “We’re not tourists. We’re travelers.” As Tunner plans a short stay, Port and Kit intend to remain for a year or more.

Encountering New Faces

Upon their arrival and while waiting for lodging, the trio encounters English travelers Mrs. Lyle, a travel writer, and her son, Eric. Eric’s constant need for money due to his mother’s financial limitations leads to a series of events. Meanwhile, an older man observes the group from afar at the hotel bar.

A Turn of Events

An altercation between Port and Kit prompts him to explore the city alone. His impromptu encounter with a prostitute and subsequent incident with a mob set the tone for a series of misfortunes. Meanwhile, Kit tries to conceal Port’s absence from Tunner by staging a false scenario.

Tunner and Kit share a night of revelry, raising suspicions in Port’s mind. As tensions rise, Port takes drastic measures to separate Kit and Tunner, leading to unexpected consequences.

The Tragic End

As the journey progresses, Port falls ill with typhoid fever, and Kit faces the harsh realities of their situation. Despite her efforts to care for him, Port tragically passes away, leaving Kit alone in the harsh desert.

Kit’s fate takes a dark turn as she finds herself in captivity with Belqassim, a Targui, leading to a forbidden affair. After a series of events, Kit is rescued and brought back to civilization, haunted by the memories of their journey.
