Cherie Currie, a Los Angeles teenager, is determined to become a rock star, inspired by her idol David Bowie. She transforms her appearance to emulate Bowie’s Aladdin Sane character, leading to a memorable performance at her high school talent show where she lip syncs to “Lady Grinning Soul” and wins over the audience.

Joan Jett’s Dream

Meanwhile, Joan Jett also dreams of rock stardom and meets record producer Kim Fowley at a club. Together, they discuss forming an all-girl rock band. Kim introduces Joan to drummer Sandy West, and the two begin jamming together. Kim suggests adding an attractive blonde to the group, reminiscent of Brigitte Bardot.

Formation of The Runaways

Kim and Joan search Los Angeles clubs for the perfect blonde, leading them to Cherie. She auditions with a Suzi Quatro song but impresses the band with her rendition of “Cherry Bomb,” becoming the lead singer of the newly-formed band, The Runaways. The group is completed by Lita Ford on guitar and Robin on bass.

The Runaways quickly gain success with a record deal and an album release. However, tensions arise within the band during a performance in Japan, leading to Cherie’s struggles with drug abuse. As the band works on their next album, conflicts escalate, causing Cherie to leave the group and Joan to start her own band, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

Reunion and Reflection

Years later, Cherie, now working in a bakery, hears Joan’s cover of “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” on the radio. She contacts the station during Joan’s visit for an interview, leading to a bittersweet reunion between the former bandmates. Despite past differences, Cherie finds solace in hearing Joan’s music on the radio, reflecting on their shared experiences.
