The Count of Chabannes’ Desperate Decision

Sickened by the violence of the French Wars of Religion, the Count of Chabannes, a Huguenot Protestant, deserts the army and is saved by his former student, the Prince of Montpensier. Together they ride to negotiate a marriage between the Prince and Marie Mézières, a 17-year-old woman.

The Tumultuous Marriage

After the wedding, Chabannes tutors Marie on humanistic education while her husband is away. They grow close, leading to Chabannes declaring his love, only to be rejected by Marie. Jealousy and conflict arise when other men, including the Duke of Guise and the Duke of Anjou, show interest in Marie. Guise’s intense feelings for Marie lead to a night of passion and betrayal.
