Foul-mouthed and cantankerous London woman Joanie “Nan” Taylor’s (Catherine Tate) is living her best life and her grandson, Jamie (Mathew Horne) now has a YouTube channel making short films.
Nan receives a letter from her younger sister, Nell (Katherine Parkinson), who tells her she is dying. Jamie wants to go to see her but Nan is reluctant. However, when she gets an invite from her neighbours to have dinner with them (who Nan tells Jamie they are naturists), she decides to go see Nell.
During the journey, Jamie asks why she and Nell fell out, to which Nan tells him about their past. When she was young, she and Nell got on well until their father died. The outbreak of World War II changed everything when they met an American soldier named Walter (Parker Sawyers).
Joanie and Nell both fell for Walter, but Nell manipulates the situation, causing a rift between the sisters. Joanie eventually rejects Walter’s feelings for her, leading to a series of events that result in marriage for both Nell and Joanie, but with different men.
On the road trip, Jamie and Nan find themselves in unexpected situations, from causing trouble in a hotel in Liverpool to joining a vegan activist named Mick in Dublin to help animals escape slaughterhouses. The journey takes a dangerous turn when they encounter Officer Mahler (Niky Wardley), who has a score to settle with Nan.
With the help of Australian friends, Nan, Jamie, and Mick manage to evade capture, but not without facing challenges that test their relationships and values. As they reach Nell’s place, Nan comes to terms with her past and discovers unexpected truths about love and family.
Inside Nell’s home, Nan confronts her feelings towards Walter and Terry, realizing where her true affection lies. Jamie’s support and understanding help Nan navigate the emotional journey, leading to heartfelt moments with Nell and closure for the sisters.
As they bid farewell and head back to London, Nan reflects on the adventures and revelations of the trip. Their return home brings a surprising encounter with their naturist neighbours, inviting them to join in an unexpected activity, leaving Nan with one last witty remark before the screen fades to black.
