In 1885 India, journalist Rudyard Kipling is approached by Peachy Carnehan, an old acquaintance, who reveals a tale about himself and Danny Dravot, two ex-sergeants of the British Army.
Dravot and Carnehan devise a plan to travel to Kafiristan with a small army, offering their services to a local ruler with intentions to betray him and claim the country’s riches.
As they gain power and are hailed as gods by the locals, Dravot’s hubris leads to his downfall when a young woman’s actions reveal his mortality, resulting in a tragic end to his short-lived reign.
