Henry Holland, living a life of luxury in Rio de Janeiro, recounts an evening where he dined with a British visitor and shared the story of his life-changing gold bullion robbery scheme. One year ago, Holland was an unambitious London bank clerk responsible for gold bullion deliveries, dreaming of a way to steal a consignment by selling it abroad.

At his boarding house in Lavender Hill, Holland meets artist Alfred Pendlebury, who owns a foundry producing souvenirs sold in holiday destinations like Paris. Recognizing Pendlebury as crucial to his plan, Holland shares his scheme, and they recruit petty thieves Lackery Wood and Shorty Fisher to help execute the heist.

However, when some of the paperweights are accidentally sold, Holland and Pendlebury embark on a chase to recover them, leading to a wild pursuit across London.
