Thorin Oakenshield and his company are being pursued by Azog and his Orc party. Urged by Gandalf, they seek refuge with Beorn, a skin-changer, who can transform into a bear. That night, Azog is summoned by the Necromancer to prepare for war. Azog orders his son Bolg to hunt Thorin. Beorn warns the company about Mirkwood’s dangers and escorts them to the forest border, where Gandalf discovers Black Speech on an old ruin.

Lost in Mirkwood, the company is trapped by giant spiders. Bilbo uses the ring’s power to save them but feels the ring’s dark influence.
