Approaching his 111th birthday, the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins begins writing the story of his adventure 60 years earlier for his nephew, Frodo.
Long before Bilbo’s involvement, the Dwarf king Thrór brought an era of prosperity for his kin under the Lonely Mountain until the arrival of the dragon Smaug. Smaug destroyed the nearby town of Dale, drove the Dwarves out of their mountain, and took their hoard of gold. Thorin, Thrór’s grandson, harbored everlasting hatred towards Elves due to an encounter with King Thranduil and his Wood-elves.
In the Shire, Bilbo is tricked by the wizard Gandalf the Grey into joining Thorin and his company of Dwarves on a quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain. Initially hesitant, Bilbo eventually decides to accompany the group after they leave without him, showcasing his bravery and resourcefulness along the way.
As the company embarks on their quest, they face numerous hurdles, including a confrontation with Trolls, an encounter with the Necromancer, and a battle with Goblins in the Misty Mountains. Bilbo’s unexpected encounter with Gollum and the acquisition of a mysterious ring further complicate their journey.
Upon reaching the Lonely Mountain, the company faces a final showdown with Azog, an Orc war-chief seeking vengeance against Thorin. Gandalf’s timely intervention and the bravery of Bilbo and the Dwarves culminate in a daring escape and a newfound respect between Thorin and Bilbo.
