The Hiding Place: A Story of Bravery and Faith

As the Nazis invaded the Netherlands in 1940, Corrie (Jeannette Clift George) and her family made a courageous decision to provide a hiding place for Jews in their home, believing that God would guide and protect them through this endeavor. With the help of the Dutch resistance, a secret room was constructed to shelter the Jews in case of a Nazi raid.

The Betrayal and Raid

Despite a few mishaps, such as noisy singing that nearly gave away their secret, the Jews remained hidden safely in the house. However, a betrayal by a Dutch collaborator led to a Nazi raid on 28 February 1944, resulting in the arrest of Corrie, her family, and their friends. Miraculously, the hidden Jews were never discovered, even after an extensive search of the house.

Suffering and Hope

Corrie’s father passed away before reaching the concentration camp, leaving her uncertain of her fate. Alongside her sister Betsie (Julie Harris), Corrie endured the hardships of Ravensbrück concentration camp, where they were punished for harboring Jews. Despite the brutal conditions, Betsie’s unwavering faith inspired Corrie to hold on to hope in the face of adversity.

With minimal food, grueling labor, and harsh treatment, the women faced constant suffering, culminating in Betsie’s tragic death. In a twist of fate, Corrie was released from the camp in December 1944 due to a clerical error, sparing her from the gas chambers where her fellow prisoners met their end in January 1945.
