The narrator (Ray Bradbury) recounts the tale of one small American town gearing up for Halloween night. Four friends eagerly get into their costumes: Jenny as a witch, Ralph as a mummy, Wally as a monster, and Tom Skelton as a skeleton. Their plans to meet up with their friend Joe Pipkin are interrupted when they find out he’s being rushed to the hospital for an emergency appendectomy. They refuse to start Halloween celebrations without him and decide to visit him at the hospital instead.
Tom suggests a shortcut through the eerie woods known as the dark ravine, where they catch a glimpse of what appears to be a ghostly version of Pip. Convinced it’s all a prank, Tom leads them on a chase through the woods, ultimately ending up at a foreboding mansion where they meet a mysterious man named Carapace Clavicle Moundshroud. He reveals that he’s after Pip’s ghost and challenges the children to a race against time to retrieve Pip’s pumpkin.
The group embarks on a journey through different time periods related to their costumes. They visit Ancient Egypt, witness rituals at Stonehenge, explore Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, and learn about the Day of the Dead festival in Mexico. Along the way, they encounter obstacles, face their fears, and discover the true meaning of Halloween.
After a series of adventures, the children strike a deal with Moundshroud to bring Pip back. They offer him a year from the end of each of their lives in exchange for Pip’s return. The deal is struck, and Pip is reunited with his friends. The group returns home, where they find Pip safe and sound, with the Halloween Tree preserved as a reminder of their journey.
