Dima Nikitin, a Russian plumber, works as a municipal repair-crew chief while studying building engineering in an unnamed town. Despite his dauntless nature, he faces challenges from his pessimistic family and an uncaring community. Living with his hasty mother, apathetic father, and wife and son, Dima struggles with financial burdens as he pursues his education and works as a plumber.
One day, while inspecting a leaky pipe in a building, Dima realizes that the entire structure is tilting. Aware of the impending disaster, he tries to alert the authorities about the urgent need for action. However, his warnings fall on deaf ears as the officials, including Mayor Nina Galaganova and the inspector Fedotov, dismiss his concerns due to their own selfish motives.
As the truth about the building’s inevitable collapse becomes undeniable, Galaganova and Bogachyov decide to scapegoat Fedotov and Matugin while attempting to cover up years of corruption and embezzlement. Dima, Fedotov, and Matugin are taken into police custody under false pretenses, with the intention of eliminating them to avoid the financial repercussions of the building collapse.
Despite Fedotov’s plea for Dima’s release, only Dima is spared as he is instructed to leave the city with his family. Tragically, Fedotov and Matugin meet a grim fate at the hands of those seeking to conceal their crimes.
With no one taking action to evacuate the building, Dima takes it upon himself to warn the residents of the impending danger. Despite facing resistance and attacks from those who doubt him, Dima persists in trying to save lives by urging people to leave before it’s too late. His courage and selflessness stand in stark contrast to the indifference of the community.
