In 1844, the Nilsson family resides on a small farm in the woods at Korpamoen in Ljuder Parish, Småland, Sweden. Karl Oskar, the eldest son, takes over the farm after his father’s injury. He marries Kristina Johansdotter, and they start a family, facing challenges like rock-filled fields and poor harvests that leave them hungry and in debt. Kristina blames Karl Oskar’s irreligious attitude for their troubles.
Robert Nilsson, Karl Oskar’s brother, tired of mistreatment at Aron’s farm, dreams of a better life in America. When he realizes they can’t afford the journey, he considers selling his share of the family farm. Karl Oskar, privately contemplating emigration, discusses the idea with Robert. Kristina, hesitant to leave her homeland, reluctantly agrees after a family tragedy.
The group, including Kristina’s uncle Danjel, Ulrika of Västergöhl, and others, travels to Karlshamn to board a ship to New York City. They meet Måns and Fina-Kajsa Andersson, who are headed to Minnesota. Karl Oskar and Kristina decide to join them after awe-inspiring stories of the land’s potential. Despite losses during the voyage, they arrive in New York and continue their journey westward to Minnesota.
After settling in Chisago Lakes, Karl Oskar secures land by Lake Ki Chi Saga for his family. The fertile soil promises a fresh start for their new life in America.
