Mr Neville, a young and conceited artist, is contracted by Mrs Virginia Herbert to produce a series of twelve landscape drawings of her country house, its outbuildings, and gardens, as a gift for her cold and neglectful husband, who is currently away on business.
Part of the contract includes Mrs Herbert’s agreement to Mr Neville’s sexual demands. Their encounters reveal Mrs Herbert’s reluctance and discomfort, contrasted with Mr Neville’s aggression and insensitivity. As tensions rise, Mr Neville becomes increasingly disliked by the estate’s residents, especially Mrs Herbert’s son-in-law, Mr Talmann.
Despite Mrs Herbert’s attempts to end the contract due to Neville’s excessive sexual appetite, he refuses, leading to more encounters. Mrs Talmann, frustrated by her husband’s lack of interest in conceiving a child, blackmails Neville into a second contract to fulfill her desires.
