In November 1941, a British commando unit deploys off the North African coast to raid Field Marshal Erwin Rommel’s headquarters and assassinate the “Desert Fox”. Rommel is recovering in Germany from nasal diphtheria, as heavy casualties occur on both sides.
Adolf Hitler recalls Rommel to his Afrika Korps command as the British Eighth Army prepares to counterattack in the Second Battle of El Alamein. Despite lacking supplies and support, Hitler orders Rommel to hold fast, leading to Rommel questioning the directive and contemplating ignoring it.
After falling ill again, Rommel is approached by Dr. Karl Strölin, a family friend, to join a group plotting Hitler’s overthrow. Refusing the offer, Rommel is later transferred to Western Europe to oversee the Atlantic Wall’s completion, only to discover its defenses are inadequate against an Allied invasion.
Recognizing Hitler’s miscalculations and errors during the D-Day landings, Rommel discusses a conspiracy with Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt. Von Rundstedt expects Rommel to be named his successor, but Rommel is injured in a strafing attack before any plans materialize.
On July 20, a failed assassination attempt on Hitler leads to Rommel being implicated in a conspiracy. Facing charges of treason, Rommel is given an ultimatum by General Wilhelm Burgdorf, ultimately choosing a painless suicide to protect his family.
Rommel bids a farewell to his wife and son before meeting his fate, with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill praising his character and courage. His story of chivalry in battle and defiance against Hitler comes to a close as the credits roll.
