The Day of the Jackal Full Movie fmovies: A Gripping Tale of Assassination

On 22 August 1962, a militant underground organization known as OAS, enraged by the French government’s decision to grant independence to Algeria, makes a bold attempt to assassinate President Charles de Gaulle. This assassination attempt fails, leaving de Gaulle and his entourage unharmed. Within six months, OAS leader Jean Bastien-Thiry and several other members are captured, leading to Bastien-Thiry’s execution.

The OAS’s Desperate Plan

With the remaining OAS leaders now hiding in Austria, they devise another plan to eliminate de Gaulle. They hire a British assassin, known only by the code name “Jackal,” for a staggering sum of $500,000. The Jackal travels to Genoa, where he commissions a custom rifle from a skilled gunsmith and forges fake identity papers. However, when the forger attempts to blackmail him, the Jackal kills him, ensuring no loose ends remain.

In Paris, the Jackal duplicates a key to a sixth-floor flat that overlooks the Place du 18 juin 1940, setting the stage for his deadly mission.

The Investigation Intensifies

Meanwhile, the OAS relocates to Rome, and the French Action Service takes drastic measures by kidnapping the OAS’s chief clerk, Viktor Wolenski. Although Wolenski dies under interrogation, he provides crucial information about the assassination plot, including the mention of the word “Jackal.” This prompts the Interior Minister to convene a secret cabinet meeting with the heads of the French security forces.

Police Commissioner Berthier recommends his deputy, Claude Lebel, to lead the investigation. Lebel is granted special emergency powers, but de Gaulle’s refusal to alter his public appearances complicates the situation further.

Secrets and Betrayals

Colonel St. Clair, a personal military aide to de Gaulle, inadvertently reveals classified information to his mistress, Denise, who is secretly an OAS agent. She relays this information to her contacts, inadvertently aiding the Jackal in his mission. Meanwhile, Lebel suspects British national Charles Harold Calthrop, whose name suggests a connection to the word “chacal,” the French term for jackal. He believes Calthrop may be traveling under the alias Paul Oliver Duggan, a name linked to a deceased child.

Despite learning that authorities are onto him, the Jackal decides to proceed with his plan. While staying at a hotel, he meets and seduces the aristocratic Colette de Montpellier. However, after being warned by his contact, he narrowly escapes just before Lebel and his team arrive. Following a near-fatal car accident, the Jackal seeks refuge at Madame de Montpellier’s country estate, where he kills her after she reveals that the police have already questioned her.

The Jackal’s Transformation

Using a stolen passport, the Jackal assumes the identity of a bespectacled Danish schoolteacher named Per Lundquist. After disposing of Duggan’s belongings in a river, he boards a train to Paris. However, Madame de Montpellier’s body is discovered, and her car is found at the railway station. With secrecy restrictions lifted, Lebel launches a public manhunt for the Jackal.

In a twist of fate, the Jackal picks up a man at a Turkish bathhouse and stays at his flat. When the man sees a news broadcast identifying “Lundquist” as a suspect in the murder of Madame de Montpellier, the Jackal kills him to eliminate any witnesses.

The Final Countdown

During a cabinet meeting, Lebel expresses his belief that the Jackal will attempt to assassinate de Gaulle during the upcoming commemoration of the liberation of Paris, scheduled for three days later. He plays a recording of a phone call in which Denise provides information to an OAS contact. St. Clair, realizing his mistake, leaves the meeting, but not before Lebel reveals that he wiretapped every cabinet member’s phone.

As the investigation heats up, the French Interior Minister, feeling confident that the case is nearly solved, dismisses Lebel from the case. However, after Denise discovers St. Clair’s suicide, the Interior Minister reinstates Lebel, realizing the urgency of the situation.

The Day of Reckoning

On Liberation Day, the Jackal, disguised as André Martin, an elderly French veteran amputee, enters a building using the key he had previously acquired. In an upper apartment overlooking the ceremonial area, he assembles the rifle hidden within his crutch and waits for the perfect moment to strike.
