In 1943, a contingent of British prisoners of war, led by Colonel Nicholson, arrive at a Japanese prison camp in Thailand. United States Navy Commander Shears informs Nicholson of the horrific camp conditions. Despite the challenges, escape is deemed impossible due to the dense jungle surrounding the camp.
Colonel Saito, the camp commandant, orders the prisoners to construct a railway bridge over the River Kwai. Nicholson protests, citing the Geneva Convention that exempts officers from manual labor. Saito threatens the officers but is warned against violence by Major Clipton, the British medical officer. Nicholson and his officers endure punishment under the scorching heat due to their refusal to work.
As the bridge construction falters, Saito gives Nicholson an ultimatum, demanding he commit suicide if the bridge is not completed on time. In a surprising turn, Nicholson takes charge of the project and insists on building a proper bridge as a tribute to the British Army’s capabilities. This decision leads to conflicting opinions among the prisoners, with some seeing it as collaboration with the enemy.
