In the enchanting tale of “The Boo,” we follow Mary Beth, a dedicated museum tour guide, as she takes a group of school detention students on a secret museum tour. During this adventure, she shares the captivating story of a Mexican town called San Angel, inspired by the Book of Life, which holds every story in the world.

Exploring San Angel: The Day of the Dead

On the Day of the Dead, the rulers of the afterlife, La Muerte and Xibalba, observe the lives of two young boys, Manolo Sánchez and Joaquín Mondragon. Both boys are vying for the affection of their mutual crush, María Posada. The gods decide to strike a wager: if María marries Manolo, Xibalba will cease his interference in mortal affairs. Conversely, if she chooses Joaquín, La Muerte and Xibalba will swap their realms. However, Xibalba resorts to cheating by giving Joaquín a powerful artifact known as the Medal of Everlasting Life, which grants him invincibility and immense courage.

María’s Journey: From San Angel to Spain

After a daring act of bravery, María is sent to Spain to become a “lady.” Years later, she returns to San Angel, only to find that Joaquín has become a celebrated military hero, thanks to the Medal’s influence. Meanwhile, Manolo’s father, Carlos, has trained him to be a bullfighter, although Manolo’s true passion lies in music. During Manolo’s first bullfight, he triumphs over the bull but refuses to kill it, earning the ire of Carlos and the crowd, yet impressing María with his compassion.

That night, María faces pressure from her father and San Angel’s mayor, General Ramiro Posada, to marry Joaquín, who is seen as the protector of the town against the Bandit King Chakal. Despite her father’s wishes, María confesses her love for Manolo just before dawn. However, their moment is shattered when Xibalba sends his dual-headed snake staff, which bites María and sends her into a deep coma.

Manolo’s Sacrifice: A Journey to the Afterlife

Devastated by María’s apparent death, Manolo makes the ultimate sacrifice, allowing Xibalba to kill him in the hope of reuniting with her in the afterlife. In the Land of the Remembered, Manolo is joyfully reunited with his mother and ancestral family. They journey to La Muerte’s castle, where they discover that Xibalba has taken control of the realm. Xibalba smugly reveals that María is alive, having survived the snake bite, while Manolo, having been bitten twice, is dead.

Determined to return to María, Manolo embarks on a quest to the Cave of Souls, where he meets the Candle Maker, the overseer of mortal lives and the keeper of the Book of Life. The Candle Maker informs Manolo that his story is blank and can be rewritten. Together, they travel to the Land of the Forgotten, where they confront Xibalba and expose his deceit. Enraged, La Muerte offers a new wager: if Manolo can complete a challenge set by Xibalba, he will be returned to life. If he fails, he will be forgotten, and Xibalba will retain control over both realms.

The Challenge: Facing Fears and Finding Strength

Xibalba presents Manolo with a daunting challenge: to face a giant bull skeleton, formed from the remains of every bull slain by the Sánchez family. Meanwhile, María awakens from her coma, heartbroken over Manolo’s death. She reluctantly agrees to marry Joaquín, but he begins to have doubts upon witnessing her sorrow. Their wedding is abruptly interrupted by Chakal, who leads his army to San Angel in search of the Medal.

In a heroic act, Carlos sacrifices himself to buy time for the town, arriving in the Land of the Remembered just in time to witness Manolo’s challenge. As Manolo confronts the bull skeleton, he realizes that his true fear is not the bull itself, but the fear of being himself. Instead of fighting, he chooses to sing an apology to the bull, a gesture that resonates with everyone present, including Xibalba and Carlos.

Resurrection and Redemption: A New Beginning

Impressed by Manolo’s bravery and compassion, the deities resurrect him and send him back to San Angel to protect the town. In a climactic moment, Manolo is knocked unconscious when Chakal self-destructs, but he is shielded by the Medal, which Joaquín had earlier slipped to him.
