A group of gypsy caravans sets up on the edge of a wood, only to discover they are camped on the estate of Count Arnheim, who adamantly opposes their presence. Despite this, the gypsies find solace in their singing and dancing to entertain themselves.

Within the group, Stanley Laurel and Oliver Hardy stand out as the misfit pair of Gypsies. While the hen-pecked Oliver engages in pickpocketing, fortune-telling, or zither lessons, his wife, Mae Busch, engages in an affair with Devilshoof, portrayed by Antonio Moreno. The cruel nobleman, Count Arnheim, takes a harsh stance against the Gypsies, leading them to flee. In a twist of events, Mrs. Hardy kidnaps Arnheim’s daughter, Arline, and tricks Oliver into believing she is their own child. As time passes, Arline forgets her true identity, unaware of her past.

The Return to Arnheim’s Estate

After twelve years, the Gypsies return to Arnheim’s estate, where a grown-up Arline, played by Jacqueline Wells, accidentally trespasses in the garden. Recognizing the place and Arnheim’s voice, she is arrested and sentenced to a lashing. In a valiant attempt to rescue her, Stan and Oliver find themselves in trouble, leading to their own arrest. As Arline faces the impending punishment, Arnheim recognizes her through a family medallion and birthmark, sparking a rescue mission for all involved. Unfortunately, their efforts come too late, as Laurel and Hardy undergo a bizarre transformation in the torture chamber.
