During the Great Patriotic War, two Soviet partisans, Sotnikov and Rybak, venture into a Belarusian village in search of food. After a confrontation with a collaborationist headman, they are chased by a German patrol and engage in a gunfight. Sotnikov is injured, and Rybak seeks shelter for him with Demchikha, a mother of three, but they are captured.
At the German headquarters, Sotnikov faces interrogation by Portnov, a local collaborator. Despite torture, Sotnikov refuses to divulge information. Rybak, desperate to save himself, cooperates with Portnov, hoping for leniency. Both men and others from the village are imprisoned together, with Sotnikov taking full blame to protect the rest.
