Suzume Free Watch: A Journey Through Abandoned Doors

Suzume Iwato is a seventeen-year-old orphaned high-school girl living with her aunt in a town in Kyushu. She has recurring dreams of her childhood self walking through a ruined cityscape at night, before running into a shadowy figure she believes to be her late mother.

Discovering Abandoned Secrets

On her way to school one morning, Suzume meets a young man searching for abandoned locations with doors. She tells him of a nearby abandoned onsen resort and curiously follows him. There, she discovers a door free-standing on its frame. Suzume opens it to see a starlit field through the doorway, which she cannot enter. She then trips over a cat statue on the floor, which turns into a real cat and flees. Frightened, Suzume rushes to school.

A Supernatural Encounter

During lunch, Suzume notices a huge column of smoke from the location of the abandoned resort, which no one else can see. She returns and finds the man struggling to close the door through which the smoke is escaping. Suzume helps him and he locks the door with an old key. The worm-like smoke disappears, causing earthquake damage to the town.

Suzume takes the man, Souta Munakata, to her home. He explains that he is a “Closer” and must locate and lock specific doors in abandoned places throughout Japan to prevent a supernatural “worm” from being released and causing earthquakes. As they talk, the cat from the resort appears and turns Souta into the chair he was sitting on. Souta, now an animated three-legged chair, chases the cat onto a ferry headed for Ehime, with Suzume following.

Unraveling the Mystery

In Ehime, they locate the worm again and close the door it is escaping from in an abandoned school. With help from a local girl named Chika Amabe, they successfully seal the worm before heading to Kobe with a bar owner named Rumi Ninomiya. Suzume, Souta, and Daijin then embark on a journey to stop the worm from emerging and causing chaos.

The Final Confrontation

As they reach Tokyo, Souta reveals a legend and tasks Suzume with helping him seal the worm for good. With a twist of fate, the keystones shift, revealing a deeper connection between Suzume and the supernatural events. Together, they confront the worm and prevent disaster.

Resolving the Past

In a poignant resolution, Suzume revisits her past, facing her childhood trauma and finding closure. With the help of her newfound companions, she navigates through the Ever-After, reconciling with her past and guiding her younger self on a new path.
