In the heart of Colorado, Johnny Baxter finds himself at a crossroads in life. While working at his corporate job, he receives unexpected news from a probate attorney. His recently deceased uncle, Jacob Barnesworth, has left him the sole ownership of the Grand Imperial Hotel, a once-lucrative establishment in the fictional town of Silver Hill. With the promise of earning over $14,000 a month, Baxter sees this as a golden opportunity and decides to quit his job, moving his family to Colorado to take charge of the hotel.
Upon arrival, the Baxter family discovers that the Grand Imperial Hotel is an immense yet ramshackle building, lacking basic amenities like heat. They also encounter Jesse McCord, a colorful old codger living in a shed on the property. McCord offers his services as a bartender, but Baxter assigns him the role of bellhop instead. Local mechanic Wally Perkins informs Baxter that the hotel sits on a vast amount of property, sparking an idea in Baxter’s mind: transforming the hotel into a ski resort.
Determined to make his vision a reality, Baxter seeks funding for his ski resort plans. He meets with local banker Martin Ridgeway, who shows interest in Baxter’s idea but also proposes to buy the lodge to convert it into a boys’ school. When Baxter declines the offer, Ridgeway refuses to grant him a loan, citing Baxter’s lack of experience in hotel and restaurant management as a significant risk.
In search of better prospects, Baxter meets Mr. Wainwright, a friendly banker at a ski lodge. Claiming to be an avid skier, Baxter is taken to a challenging black diamond run called “Nightmare Alley.” However, his inexperience leads to a crash into a tree, leaving him with injuries and a hefty repair list for the lodge.
While Baxter recuperates, Ridgeway surprises him with a $3,000 check. With this funding, Baxter begins making necessary repairs, but things take a turn for the worse when Wally and McCord attempt to fix the hot water heater, resulting in an explosion that tears a hole in the kitchen wall. Although Ridgeway’s check covers the repair, it leaves Baxter without funds for the ski lift he envisioned.
In a creative yet risky move, McCord pulls an old donkey engine out of storage, offering it as a makeshift ski lift. However, when Wally dynamites a tree stump, the explosion triggers an avalanche that blocks a train carrying hundreds of skiers. The Baxters quickly step in to shuttle the stranded skiers to their resort, turning a disaster into an opportunity.
Just when things seem to be improving, Wally loses his balance and skis down a steep mountain, dangling precariously over a ledge. In a daring rescue attempt, Baxter uses the donkey engine and a rope to save Wally, but the engine slides down the mountain, crashing through the hotel and causing all the guests to check out, leaving the Baxters in financial trouble once again.
Desperate, Baxter returns to Ridgeway to request an extension on his loan, but Ridgeway refuses. While contemplating his next move, Baxter notices a sign for the Silver Hills Snowmobile Race, which offers a $2,500 top prize. Seizing the opportunity, he decides to enter the race with McCord as his partner, despite his wife’s threats to leave him over his obsession with the hotel.
Though they come close to winning, Baxter and McCord narrowly lose the race. Shortly after, Ridgeway arrives at the lodge with deed transfer papers for Baxter to sign, threatening foreclosure. However, Miss Wigginton, Ridgeway’s secretary, reveals a crucial piece of information: the property includes hundreds of acres of timberland originally donated to local Indian tribes by Barnesworth. As the tribes have moved away, the land reverts to the estate, meaning Baxter now owns the land on which Silver Hill is built.
