Charlotte Dreyfus, a wealthy cosmetic tycoon, and her 12-year-old daughter Nicole (Nicky) are facing a difficult battle as Nicky is dying from leukemia. Despite this, they strike up a sentimental friendship with a California politician, Patrick Dalton. As Charlotte helps Nicky fulfill her bucket list wishes, including working for Dalton’s campaign, the trio forms a close bond.
Initially taken aback by Charlotte’s generosity, Dalton allows Nicky to help at the campaign office after learning about her terminal illness. As time passes, Dalton, Charlotte, and Nicky grow closer, with Nicky even seeing Dalton as a father figure and harboring secret hopes of more than friendship between her mother and Dalton. Despite mutual feelings, Charlotte and Dalton decide not to pursue a romantic relationship out of respect for Dalton’s wife and son.
As Charlotte takes Nicky to New York City for a break, Dalton impulsively joins them. During their trip, Nicky fulfills more of her wishes, including a tryout at a prestigious ballet company. Tragically, Nicky collapses and passes away due to complications from leukemia, leaving Dalton and Charlotte devastated.
In the aftermath of Nicky’s passing, Dalton takes Charlotte to the airport as she plans to mourn in France. Despite the heartbreak, Dalton reveals in a letter that his campaign was successful.
