A varied group of passengers boarding a ship bound for pre-WWII Germany represents a microcosm of early-1930s society.
In 1933, an ocean liner belonging to a second-rate German company is making a 26-day voyage from Veracruz, Mexico to Bremerhaven, Germany. Along the way it will stop in Cuba to pick up a large group of Spanish farm laborers who are being shipped home and will be housed like cattle in steerage. It will also pick up La Condesa, a Spanish countess.
Willi Schumann, the ship’s doctor with a serious heart ailment, embarks on his final voyage seeking meaning in his life. Unexpectedly, he falls in love with La Condesa, igniting a series of tumultuous events as their futures intertwine amidst the backdrop of a society on the brink of change.
The other passengers aboard the ship bring their own stories to the voyage, reflecting the societal dynamics of the time. From a Nazi sympathizer to a group of gypsy entertainers, each individual adds a layer of complexity to the unfolding narrative.
As the journey draws to a close, the passengers grapple with their personal demons and desires, setting the stage for a poignant and thought-provoking conclusion. Willi and La Condesa must confront their feelings and decide the path their lives will take beyond the voyage.
