Plot Summary

In January 1971, private detective John Shaft is informed that some gangsters are looking for him. He spots one of the men waiting for him in his office building and ambushes him. At gunpoint, he brings him to his office, where the second gangster is already waiting. During a short fight, Shaft dodges one of them, who falls out of a window. The other one reveals that Bumpy Jonas, the leader of a Harlem-based organized crime family, wants Shaft brought uptown to Harlem for a meeting.

Meeting with Bumpy Jonas

At the police station, Lieutenant Vic Androzzi and a detective question Shaft about the gangster’s death, which Shaft calls an “accident”. Androzzi allows Shaft to return to the streets for 48 hours to gather more information. Shaft meets with Bumpy, who tearfully reveals that his daughter has been kidnapped. Shaft agrees to help and seeks out Ben Buford, a black militant leader, for assistance.

Rescue Mission

Shaft tracks down Buford, and a shootout ensues with an unknown assailant. Androzzi informs Shaft that the tensions between uptown and downtown crime factions have escalated into other murders. Shaft pretends to be a bartender and orchestrates the arrest of the mobsters watching his apartment. After a confrontation with Androzzi, Shaft is led to Marcy’s location by a Mafia member. A shootout occurs, resulting in casualties on both sides. Shaft manages to rescue Marcy and orchestrates a getaway plan with Ben and his men.

Shaft, Ben, and his men infiltrate the hotel where Marcy is kept. Shaft successfully rescues Marcy, while Ben and his men take out the remaining gangsters. After a successful getaway, Shaft calls Androzzi to inform him of the case’s resolution. With the mission accomplished, Shaft leaves Androzzi with the task of closing the case himself, ending with a reference to an earlier scene.
