Plot Summary

Former British soldier Sam Norwood returns from Iraq after the death of his friend Douglas. Sam struggles to find work upon his return, despite his friends offering him a place in their drugs trafficking network. In order to provide for his wife and child, Sam takes up work in a prison as an officer, or ‘screw’.

The Prison Environment

Sam passes basic training alongside fellow recruits; the mild-mannered Curtis and naive hothead, Niall. The other officers include Chief Officer Rumpole and experienced officers. Deano informs Sam that Bear is an untouchable prisoner transferred after being assaulted. Bear cuts a deal with Keenan, leading to Eddie’s unfair dismissal.

Sam’s Struggles

Sam clashes with top inmate Truman and confronts Keenan about Eddie’s treatment. Sam bonds with Deano over their dislike of Keenan. The continual stress of work, including a suicide and Truman’s threats, compound Sam’s PTSD. Curtis reveals a snitch in the prison, leading to a revelation about Deano’s corruption.

The Climax

A riot breaks out, with Niall taken hostage. Sam and Jamie confront Truman and Deano, revealing their corruption. Truman turns on the pair, leading to their detainment. Truman cuts a deal with Keenan to testify against Deano and Jamie, ultimately resulting in Sam leaving the prison as a hero.
