Plot Summary

NASA prepares for the first human mission to Mars with the spacecraft Aries. A glitch in the navigation system leads them to discover a mathematical error made by astronaut Gary. Fred Z. Randall, the original software programmer, is recruited to replace Gary after he is injured. Fred proves himself during training and sets records previously held by Commander Overbeck. However, as the mission approaches, Fred gets cold feet and initially backs out.

Mission to Mars

With encouragement from Bud Nesbitt, Fred decides to join the mission. Alongside Overbeck, geologist Julie Ford, and trained chimpanzee Ulysses, they set off to explore Mars for fossils. However, challenges arise when severe sandstorms threaten their safety. Fred’s quick thinking saves the crew when the lander loses power during the storm.

Return Journey

After a successful mission on Mars, the crew is ready to return home. Fred, once again, finds himself staying awake for an extended period due to Ulysses occupying his hypersleep chamber. As they head back to Earth, a post-credits scene reveals a humorous twist involving Fred’s American flag boxers.
