After being released from prison, H.I. proposes to Ed, who has recently been left by her fiancé. They marry and settle into a mobile home in the Arizona desert, where H.I. works in a machine shop. Despite their love for each other, they face a significant hurdle: they want children, but Ed is infertile, and H.I.’s criminal record prevents them from adopting.
In a twist of fate, H.I. and Ed learn about the quintuplet sons born to Nathan Arizona, a wealthy furniture magnate. Driven by their desire to start a family, they hatch a plan to kidnap one of the babies, believing it to be Nathan Jr. This decision sets off a chain of events that intertwines their lives with those of H.I.’s former cellmates, Gale and Evelle Snoats, who escape from prison and complicate matters further.
Gale and Evelle’s arrival brings chaos into H.I. and Ed’s lives. They persuade H.I. to shelter them, tempting him to return to his old criminal ways. That night, H.I. is haunted by a nightmare featuring a monstrous biker named Leonard Smalls, foreshadowing the trouble that lies ahead.
The following day, H.I.’s foreman, Glen, visits with his unruly family, offering unsolicited parenting advice amidst the chaos of his children. Tensions rise when Glen jokingly suggests that he and H.I. exchange wives, leading to a physical confrontation. This moment highlights the struggles H.I. faces as he tries to navigate his new life.
As the pressure mounts, H.I. succumbs to temptation and robs a convenience store while buying diapers. This reckless decision leads to a thrilling chase with the police and a pack of dogs, showcasing H.I.’s desperate attempts to maintain his new family life. However, the allure of crime proves too strong, and he contemplates leaving Ed and Nathan Jr. to join Gale and Evelle in a bank robbery.
The next morning, Leonard Smalls approaches Nathan Sr., revealing himself as a bounty hunter. When Nathan Sr. refuses to pay $50,000 for Nathan Jr.’s return, Smalls decides to take matters into his own hands, threatening to sell the baby on the black market. This escalates the stakes for H.I. and Ed, who are already in over their heads.
Glen confronts H.I., accusing him and Ed of kidnapping Nathan Jr. and threatening to turn them in unless they hand the baby over to him and his wife, Dot. Meanwhile, Gale and Evelle, driven by their own desires, overpower H.I. and kidnap Nathan Jr. themselves. This forces H.I. and Ed to band together to rescue their son.
As Gale and Evelle grow attached to Nathan Jr., they nearly leave him behind during a convenience store robbery and forget him again during a bank heist. A dye pack explodes in their stolen money sack, covering them in blue dye and leading to a chaotic series of events. In the midst of this, Smalls captures Nathan Jr., setting the stage for a dramatic confrontation.
In a climactic struggle, Ed manages to grab Nathan Jr. from Smalls, while H.I. faces a brutal beating. In a moment of desperation, H.I. pulls the pin from one of Smalls’ grenades, resulting in a massive explosion that eliminates the threat once and for all.
After the chaos, H.I. and Ed sneak back into the Arizona home to return Nathan Jr. However, Nathan Sr. catches them in the act. Surprisingly, he sympath
