Bill, now 18, receives his call-up papers for national service and befriends fellow-conscript Percy at the army training camp. Assigned as sergeants, they find themselves teaching typing while dealing with the strict Sergeant-Major Bradley. With the help of orderly Redmond, they learn the art of “skiving” to avoid work.
However, Bradley accuses Bill of subverting a private’s will to fight. The case is dismissed when Bill proves his innocence by referencing a newspaper report. Outside camp, Bill falls for a depressive upper-class girl named Ophelia, while Percy is charmed by a student nurse named Sophie, who also catches Bill’s eye.
On leave for Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, Percy and Bill reunite with Bill’s sister Dawn, who captivates Percy. Ophelia’s unexpected visit reveals her noble background, leading to a heartbreaking rejection of Bill. In his despair, Sophie comforts Bill and shares an intimate moment with him.
Percy struggles with military life and hatches a foolish plan to steal a valuable artifact, resulting in his arrest and imprisonment. Bill escorts Percy to military prison, where Dawn pledges to wait for him. Bill’s attempt to reconcile with Bradley is met with rejection, but he finds solace in connecting with injured soldier Private Henderson.
