In August 1942, American forces are engaged in combat with the Japanese in the South Pacific during World War II. U.S. Navy Lieutenant, junior grade John F. Kennedy, fresh out of PT boat training, uses his family’s influence to secure a position in the Solomon Islands.
Assigned the PT 109, Kennedy faces initial skepticism from his crew. Through determination and skilled leadership, he prepares the boat for action and undertakes a mission to evacuate paramarines under heavy fire.
While on patrol in 1943, the PT 109 encounters a Japanese destroyer without radar. The boat is rammed and sliced in half, leading to tragic casualties among the crew.
After the PT 109 sinks, Kennedy leads the surviving crew to safety on Plum Pudding Island. Through resourcefulness and perseverance, they eventually attract the attention of a passing U.S. vessel and are rescued.
