In the heart of Philadelphia, Andrew Beckett, a senior associate at the largest corporate law firm, leads a life filled with ambition and secrecy. He conceals his homosexuality and his status as an AIDS patient from his colleagues, fearing the repercussions of revealing his true self. However, a partner at the firm notices a troubling lesion on Beckett’s forehead, which he attributes to a racquetball injury. Unbeknownst to them, this lesion is a sign of Kaposi’s sarcoma, an AIDS-defining condition.

As Beckett grapples with his health, he decides to stay home from work for several days, desperately trying to find a way to hide his lesions. He diligently finishes the paperwork for an important case, leaving instructions for his assistants to file it the following day, just before the statute of limitations expires. To counter the defense’s claims, Miller asks Beckett to unbutton his shirt while on the witness stand, revealing the visible lesions that are unmistakably associated with AIDS. Throughout the trial, Miller’s initial homophobia begins to dissipate as he and Beckett form a bond through their shared struggle for justice.

The Emotional Toll and the Verdict

As the trial progresses, Beckett’s health deteriorates. He collapses and is hospitalized after a particularly painful moment when Charles Wheeler, the partner he admired most, testifies against him. Another partner, Bob Seidman, confesses that he suspected Beckett had AIDS but never spoke up, expressing deep regret for his silence. During Beckett’s hospital stay, the jury ultimately votes in his favor, awarding him over $5 million in back pay, damages for pain and suffering, and punitive damages.

After the verdict, Miller visits Beckett in the hospital, overcoming his fears enough to touch Beckett’s face. In a poignant moment, Beckett tells his lover, Miguel Alvarez, that he is “ready.” Later that night, Miller and his wife receive a heartbreaking phone call from Miguel, informing them that Beckett has passed away.
