Plot Overview

Three Italian-American brothers, living in the slums of 1940’s New York City, try to help each other with one’s wrestling career using one brother’s promotional skills and another brother’s con-artist tactics to thwart a sleazy manager.

The Carboni Brothers

It’s 1946 in Hell’s Kitchen in New York City. Cosmo Carboni, the eldest of the three brothers, is hustling and panhandling for money, feeling they are not living up to their potential. Lenny Carboni, an injured veteran, is an undertaker with a sullen attitude from his time in the war. Victor Carboni, the simple muscle-man, is an iceman who looks up to Lenny and his girlfriend Susan Chow as voices of reason.

Victor’s Opportunity

After Victor impresses everyone by holding his own against wrestler Frankie the Thumper, Cosmo sees wrestling as Victor’s calling. He envisions the brothers working together as trainer and manager to make a mark in the lucrative wrestling matches at the underground nightclub Paradise Alley. Lenny reluctantly agrees to ensure Victor’s safety, leading to Victor being rechristened as “Kid Salami.”

Torn Relationships

As the brothers dive deeper into the wrestling world, their bond starts to deteriorate. Their relationships, especially with taxi dancer Annie, come under strain as their priorities shift.
