George Plimpton, a journalist for Sports Illustrated, has always sought adventure in the world of professional sports. From pitching against baseball All-Stars to boxing with legends like Sugar Ray Robinson, he’s tried it all. But his biggest challenge yet comes when his editor proposes an idea during a casual game of touch football – why not join a professional football team’s training camp as a player?
Despite facing numerous rejections, the Detroit Lions agree to let George join their training camp. Attempting to hide his amateur status, George soon finds himself exposed as the truth comes out. While some players resent his presence, star player Alex Karras steps in to defend him.
As George struggles through training camp, his lack of skill becomes evident. Despite taking hits and fumbling through practices, he maintains a positive attitude that earns him respect from his teammates. Even when he scores a touchdown, only to realize it was a setup by his fellow Lions, he takes it in stride.
With a preseason game against the St. Louis Cardinals looming, the Lions’ coach decides to let George play quarterback for one series of downs. What follows is a series of mishaps – sacks, mistakes, and even a collision with a goal post that knocks George out cold. The game footage captures it all, showcasing George’s amateur struggles.
Despite the challenges and setbacks, George returns to New York City with a newfound respect for the athletes he’s tried to emulate. He may not have excelled on the field, but he’s gained a unique perspective that will make for a compelling story. As he sits down to write about his experiences, he reflects on the trials and triumphs of his time as a Paper Lion.
