The Battle of Saipan

During the Battle of Saipan on 7 July 1944, Captain Sakae Ōba leads a banzai charge against the United States Marine Corps, resulting in a large loss of Japanese lives. Despite their efforts, the American forces secure the island on 9 July, forcing Ōba and a few survivors to retreat into the jungle.

Guerrilla Warfare

With limited resources and a small group of soldiers and civilians, Ōba, known as “the Fox,” adopts guerrilla tactics in the mountains of Saipan. His strategic use of Mount Tapochau as a base allows him to hold out for an impressive 512 days before finally surrendering on 1 December 1945.

Even after Japan’s surrender following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Ōba’s determination and leadership keep his small group organized and resilient in the face of overwhelming odds.

The Last Stand

As Ōba and his remaining survivors march down from the mountain, they sing the “Spirit of Infantry” song, symbolizing the indomitable spirit of the Japanese soldiers. Despite the war’s end, Ōba’s formal surrender and presentation of his sword to the American commander mark the last organized resistance of Japanese forces in World War II.

Oba: The Last Samurai is a gripping story of courage, perseverance, and honor in the face of adversity. Watch it now for a riveting portrayal of one man’s unwavering commitment to his cause.
