At a difficult place in his marriage and career, a middle-aged man gets a shot at a do-over when he's transformed back into his 18-year-old body.
Country: South Korea
In 1938, the Redlich family flees to Kenya from Leobschütz in Silesia, Nazi Germany, to escape the increasing persecution of the Jews. Walter, a former lawyer, finds work as a farm manager and sends for his family. His wife Jettel has trouble adjusting to life in Africa, although their daughter Regina quickly adapts to her new environment, easily learning the language of the country and showing interest in local culture. Regina forms a close friendship with the farm’s cook, Owuor, who helped save Walter’s life when he contracted malaria. Jettel’s only German contact is through a friend of Walter’s named Süsskind, an ex-German who has lived in Africa for years.
When war breaks out, the British authorities round up all German citizens and intern them, including Jews, separating men from women. The Redlichs’ marriage begins to deteriorate, with accusations and secrets revealed. Walter decides to join the British Army, but Jettel chooses to stay and run the farm with Owuor. Regina is sent to an English boarding school, only able to visit during the harvest season. Jettel becomes fluent in Swahili and gains an appreciation for African culture.
Walter returns from the war, and Jettel reconciles with him. After sharing his traumatic experiences, he plans to return to Germany, but Jettel refuses, feeling that Africa is now their home. As they face challenges together, including a locust threat to their crops, their relationship strengthens. Jettel’s pregnancy and Walter’s realization of her fidelity lead to a renewed commitment. Regina’s bond with Owuor makes the decision to leave Africa difficult.
As the Redlich family prepares to leave Africa, they reflect on their experiences and relationships. Regaining a sense of unity, they embark on a journey back to Germany, with new hope for the future as they carry on the legacy of their past generations.
