Plot Summary:

Jay Morgan is the uncrowned king of a Rocky Mountains valley, who as the main employer and sponsor expects everyone to gratefully help execute his plan to modernize the ski resort his grandfather built. His aunt Barbara Morgan and her lawyer are equally determined to keep the valley unspoiled. Jay’s newly-wed Kristen Ward, a poor-born daughter of a single sheriff’s deputy Annie, attempts to mediate a compromise. Jay, however, is furious that Barbara started initiating Kristen in his dark family secrets, and shortly after Barbara has a fatal fall at home. After knowing each other for two months, Jay Morgan and Kristin Ward elope, having met as the wealthy owner of the Paradise Mountain Lodge, a small ski resort in Oregon, and the lodge’s gardener respectively. Kristin, from a working-class background, got the job through her longtime best friend, Gus Hoffman, who also works at the lodge as a bellboy. Jay has plans to develop the valley as a year ‘round resort, which doesn’t sit well with many longtime valley residents, including his only surviving relation, his maternal aunt, Barbara Morgan. They have been long estranged due to this difference among other things.
