Harvey Milk’s Early Life

The story begins with archival footage of police raids on gay bars in the 1950s and 1960s, leading to Dianne Feinstein’s announcement of Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone’s assassination in 1978. Milk records his will days before the tragic event, flashing back to his life in 1970 New York City where he meets his lover, Scott Smith.

Move to San Francisco

Frustrated with their lives, Milk and Smith move to San Francisco where they open Castro Camera in the evolving gay neighborhood known as The Castro. Milk turns to activism due to opposition, mentoring Cleve Jones. Smith starts as his campaign manager but eventually leaves. Milk then meets Jack Lira, who also cannot handle his political devotion.

Political Career

After unsuccessful campaigns, Milk wins a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, becoming an openly gay politician. His relationship with Dan White, another supervisor, becomes strained as they clash over political projects. Milk supports gay rights efforts and opposes Proposition 6, leading to his tragic end.

The Tragic End

White, feeling betrayed by Milk, shoots both Moscone and Milk in City Hall in 1978. The film ends with a vigil for Milk and Moscone, highlighting their impact on the community.
