Medeas: A Gripping Tale of Love and Revenge

In the city of Iolcus in Greece, King Aeson is removed from power by his half-brother Pelias who becomes a cruel tyrant mad with power. Giasone, Aeson’s son, is sent to the centaur Chirone to be hidden away where Pelias cannot get him. Chirone teaches Giasone about the world and tells him about the voyage he will take to Colchis, where the Golden Fleece of Ares is kept.

The Journey to Colchis and Medea’s Involvement

Colchis is home to many bizarre rituals, like human sacrifice, presided over by the priestess Medea. Giasone grows up, travels to Iolcus, and challenges Pelias to the throne. Pelias tasks him with retrieving the Golden Fleece from Colchis. Meanwhile, Medea has a vision of Giasone and is so enraptured with him that she plans to steal the fleece in preparation for his arrival.

They join the Argonauts marching to Colchis, where the fleece is stolen, leading to a pursuit by the Colchians. Medea kills her brother to escape the pursuers. Upon returning to Greece, Medea faces a spiritual crisis, unable to connect with the new place and its practices.

Back in Iolcus, Giasone delivers the fleece to Pelias, who goes back on his promise. Medea assumes the role of a Greek wife, but Giasone grows distant and pursues a marriage with Princess Glauce. Medea, filled with rage, plots revenge.

She sends Glauce a poisoned robe and crown, causing her to burst into flames after wearing them. Medea then poisons her own sons and sets fire to the house, refusing Giasone’s pleas to bury the children, declaring, “It is useless! Nothing is possible anymore!”
