When Earth is visited by a massive fleet of flying saucers from Mars, the President of the United States, James Dale, addresses the nation. As the story unfolds, we see various characters, including talk show host Nathalie Lake and her boyfriend, news reporter Jason Stone, who interview Dale’s scientific advisor, Professor Donald Kessler, about the developing situation.

Martian Arrival: The Nation Reacts

As the Martians prepare to land outside Pahrump, Nevada, people across the country react in various ways. Among them are Richie Norris, a donut shop employee, and his older brother Billy-Glenn, a private in the US Army. Flamboyant casino operator Art Land and his hippie wife Barbara also find themselves caught up in the excitement. Divorced former boxer Byron Williams, along with his ex-wife Louise and their children Cedric and Neville, add to the mix of characters experiencing this unprecedented event.

Peaceful Intentions or a Cultural Misunderstanding?

Against the advice of the hawkish General Decker, President Dale decides to greet the Martians as foreign dignitaries. He orders military officer General Casey to welcome them to Earth. However, the situation quickly escalates when the Martian ambassador, despite claiming they “come in peace,” reacts violently after witnessing a hippie release a dove. The ambassador shoots the dove with his ray gun, leading to a catastrophic attack on the assembled crowd, resulting in the transformation of Casey, Jason, and Billy-Glenn into skeletons, along with many others. Nathalie and her pet chihuahua Poppy are abducted by the Martians.

Attempting Diplomacy: A Formal Apology

Professor Kessler convinces President Dale that the Martians’ attack may have been a result of a cultural misunderstanding. The chaos escalates when Martian soldiers overrun the White House, resulting in the tragic death of First Lady Marsha Dale, who is crushed by a falling chandelier as President Dale escapes to the PEOC.

Desperate Measures: Fleeing to Safety

In Las Vegas, Barbara prepares to flee to Tahoe in Art’s private plane, offering to let Byron accompany her. They are joined by Byron’s co-worker Cindy and guest singer Tom Jones, who offers to pilot the plane. Meanwhile, Richie abandons his parents in their mobile home and drives to his grandmother Florence’s retirement home to escort her to safety. Tragically, his parents are killed by a giant Martian robot. At the retirement home, the Martians’ heads explode upon hearing Florence’s record of Slim Whitman’s yodeling on “Indian Love Call,” revealing one of their only weaknesses.

The Final Showdown: A Last Stand

As Martian soldiers breach Dale’s secure bunker, General Decker is crushed after being reduced to minuscule size with a shrink ray. The remaining individuals flee or are turned into skeletons, leaving Dale as the last person alive in the room. In a desperate attempt to save humanity, he makes an impassioned speech urging the Martians to make peace. However, the now teary-eyed Martian leader stabs him with a fake-hand prank device after offering a handshake.

Heroic Sacrifices and the Power of Music

Barbara, Byron, Cindy, and Jones reach Art’s plane but find the runway overrun by Martians led by the Martian ambassador. To buy time for his companions to escape, Byron challenges the ambassador to a boxing match and defeats him, but is ultimately overrun by Martians as the plane takes off. Around the world, humans discover that playing “Indian Love Call” can destroy the Martians, leading to their defeat. Tragically, Kessler, Nathalie, and Poppy perish
