With oxygen supplies dwindling and only two days left before the crew runs out of air, NASA faces a daunting decision. The agency debates the feasibility of a rescue flight, but the lack of backup launch vehicles and rescue systems at Kennedy Space Center complicates matters. NASA Director Charles Keith initially opposes using an experimental U.S. Air Force lifting body, the X-RV, due to safety concerns and time constraints.

However, Ted Dougherty, NASA’s Chief Astronaut, advocates for a rescue mission, emphasizing the need to act swiftly to maintain public support for the crewed space program. The President backs Dougherty’s stance, insisting that money is no object and urging Keith to proceed with the rescue mission. Despite his reservations, Keith agrees, and Dougherty takes on the role of pilot for the operation.

The Emotional Toll: Astronauts’ Wives and the Launch Preparations

As the astronauts’ wives anxiously await news of their husbands, the control room becomes a hub of activity. Normal checklist procedures are bypassed to expedite the launch of the X-RV. The wives are allowed to communicate with their husbands, but this only heightens Lloyd’s agitation. Just as the launch is set to occur, a hurricane threatens the mission, leading to a last-minute scrub of the launch.

As Dougherty arrives in the X-RV, he embarks on a spacewalk to retrieve the astronauts. With the help of the Soviet cosmonaut, Dougherty successfully brings Lloyd back aboard the X-RV, where they exchange relieved gestures. The renewed oxygen flow revives Stone, and the two surviving astronauts are transferred to the rescue ship.
