The story unfolds in the early Meiji era, a time when shore-based whaling thrived along the Japanese Islands. An enormous North Pacific right whale, feared by many, roamed the waters, outsmarting hunters and earning the title of “Whale God” due to its elusiveness and deadly encounters with whalers.

A Vengeful Quest

On Hirado Island, the Whale God’s wrath was felt as it claimed the lives of dozens of whalers, leaving behind grieving villagers seeking vengeance. Among them was Shaki, who lost his grandfather, father, and brother to the whale’s relentless attacks. Determined to end the terror, the boss of the fishermen offered a reward of myōseki, land, and his daughter Toyo’s hand in marriage to whoever could capture the mysterious creature.

Clash of Rivals

Enter Kishū, a ruthless whaler from the Kishū region, who saw Shaki as a rival in the quest for the Whale God. In a cruel act, Kishū raped Ei, a young woman in love with Shaki, to taunt and challenge his foe. The tension between the two men reached its peak just as reports surfaced of the Whale God’s imminent return to the village.
