The film “Kalashnikov,” which can be watched for free online, begins with a poignant flashback to Mikhail Kalashnikov’s early years. As a young boy from Altai, Kalashnikov’s fascination with weapons begins when he secretly crafts a toy rifle. This passion sets the stage for his future, where he will go on to design one of the most iconic firearms in history.
In 1941, amidst the turmoil of World War II, Kalashnikov, now an adult, serves as a tank commander in the Red Army. During the brutal Battle of Bryansk, Kalashnikov sustains serious injuries while taking down a German anti-tank gun, forcing him to leave the frontlines. As he is being transported to the rear, a life-changing moment occurs. Kalashnikov and a fellow soldier encounter a group of German troops. In a critical battle moment, Kalashnikov’s comrade’s submachine gun jams due to a design flaw. This experience sparks Kalashnikov’s determination to create a new, more reliable weapon for the Soviet army, setting the stage for the Kalashnikov Watch Free legend.
On his journey home, Kalashnikov makes a stop at Matai Station in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan, where he once worked as an engineer. After being dismissed for using the depot’s workshop to build personal weapon designs, Kalashnikov approaches his former superior, Pavel Krotov, for permission to assemble his latest invention. Krotov refuses, but Kalashnikov’s persistence pays off when a high-ranking officer, Basarov, passes by and grants him authorization to proceed. With the help of the workers at Matai Station, Kalashnikov successfully assembles his submachine gun, a design that would later become famous as the Kalashnikov Watch Free weapon.
Kalashnikov’s journey takes an unexpected turn when he is arrested while trying to deliver his invention to Basarov. However, Basarov, impressed by the innovative design, has Kalashnikov’s gun sent for evaluation. After his release, Kalashnikov is encouraged to present his weapon to General Pavel Kurbatkin, the district commander of Central Asia. This opportunity marks a significant milestone in Kalashnikov’s career, leading him to a national arms design competition that would change the course of history.
Kalashnikov is sent to Golutvin, the Shchurov arms testing facility, to compete against renowned designers such as Alexey Sudayev and Sergei Korovin. It is at this facility that he meets Ekaterina Moiseeva, a design assistant who will eventually become his wife. Although his weapon ultimately loses to Sudayev’s design, Kalashnikov is given permission to continue his work on new designs. His colleagues and friends encourage him to persevere, and he takes their advice to heart, determined to improve his creation.
By the end of the war, Kalashnikov has refined his design into a new automatic rifle. He is sent to the Kovrov Arms Factory to further enhance it. Eager to test the new weapon, Kalashnikov conducts a successful trial on his own, despite being denied permission to test at the firing range. His unauthorized trial leads to his arrest, and he is brought before General Vasily Degtyaryov, a highly respected arms designer. Kalashnikov considers Degtyaryov his fiercest competitor, but to his surprise, Degtyaryov acknowledges the superiority of Kalashnikov’s design. Respecting his talent, Degtyaryov withdraws from the competition, allowing Kalashnikov’s weapon to pass the government’s trials.
In 1949, after extensive field testing, Kalashnikov’s rifle is approved for mass production. This marks a historic moment, as the design would go on to become one of the most widely used and influential firearms in the world. Kalashnikov is honored with decorations and granted an extended leave of absence, which he uses to visit his mother on the family farm with his wife and children. This moment of personal reflection highlights the human side of Kalashnikov’s remarkable journey.
